Smith Residence

Single Family Residence – Remodel
West Little Rock, Arkansas
Budget: >$100,000
Architect: Rogue Architecture LLC
Completion: Winter 2014

This project included the complete remodel of an existing kitchen as well as removing existing walls and freshening up the main living space. The existing material and color palette made the spaces very dark and segregated. Light coming in through windows was very harsh and did not provide any general illumination. The plan became very simple in design – remove all of the existing cabinets, enlarged the kitchen to include an adjacent sitting room and open up the breakfast nook to the main living area, paint everything a bright and inviting color and replace the many different floor finishes with tile.

The finish space has achieved all of those goals and more. We actually ended up reducing the amount of cabinet space, but the addition of a full pantry and small wet bar more than makes up for it with additional storage. The island allows for seating on two sides while still allowing free movement all around. And a larger window over the sink lets in a flood of natural light making the new energy efficient lighting necessary only at night.
