The Butterfly House

Single Family Residence – New Construction
Capitol View, Little Rock, Arkansas
Architect: Rogue Architecture
Contractor: EcoModern Development
Completion: Winter 2016

Located at 319 N. Summit in the Capitol View neighborhood near downtown Little Rock, the Butterfly House was designed as a prototype home with 3 main characteristics: Modern Design, durable economical materials and energy efficiency. The resulting home features three bedrooms and two baths on the lower level. The main level is dedicated to entertaining with generous kitchen, dining and living spaces as well as a powder room just off the main entry. Total heated and cooled square footage is 1,703 square feet. No space was wasted in the design of this home.

The exterior design is simple in its component pieces, but distinctly modern with butterfly roof and large panelized exterior finishes. Exposed wood and metal roof complete the modern appearance. The interiors are designed to take greatest advantage of the views of the Capitol and Episcopal School to the south and east as well as to be filled with natural light throughout the day. The main level is completely open with vaulted ceiling to let in light from the clerestory windows that face south. The lower level has all bedrooms located on the south facade.

Energy efficiency is achieved through the use of high performance insulation, quality construction detailing, insulated windows and high efficiency HVAC and Plumbing systems. The home recently scored at 0.8 air changes per hour and a 53 during a HERS test. This equals an incredibly energy efficient home far beyond what is currently required by State Building Codes.
